Ear Infections Otitis Media (middle ear infection) is common in almost 2/3 of children up to 4 years of age. The eustacian tube becomes clogged with mucoid material that provides a breeding ground for bacteria to live. The condition is almost always self-limiting, so prescribing antibiotics for it is on the decline. Chiropractic adjustments in the upper neck help to traction the eustacian tube and encourage drainage. The ears also receive an extensive nerve supply from the spine, so restoring the spine to its proper alignment should result in the return of normal nerve function.
Allergies/Sinusitis Your immune system is influenced by your nerves, hormones, and by your diet and emotional stress. If unhealthy, your immune system fails to recognize and remove abnormal cells, may not overcome infection, may overreact to foreign substances, become depressed, or even attack itself. By releasing stress on the nervous system (removing subluxations from the spine) chiropractic permits the immune system to function more effectively. The emphasis on allergies is on building a healthy body, not just on trying to use evasive tactics by eliminating all of the allergens.
Asthma There is an intimate connection between the spinal column, the nervous system, and the breathing apparatus. Even proper posture of the spine and rib cage can help a person suffering from asthma or lung conditions breathe easier. When nerve interference is removed and spinal stress (vertebral subluxations) is relieved, the body’s natural healing ability is enhanced and can affect the course of an illness or disease. Those with chronic lung conditions need to ensure their lungs and bronchi are receiving uninterrupted nerve communication from their spines.
Arthritis Chiropractic adjustments reduce stiffness by helping to free up “sticking” joints, thus increasing mobility. This helps to “pump” inflammation out of joint spaces, reduce pain, and help set the stage for better growth of cartilage and “smoother” joint movement. Regular care may help to slow down the process of degeneration.
Women's Wellness Many women suffering from gynecological problems have turned to chiropractic care for problems such as infertility, pelvic pain, PMS symptom, cramps, and other conditions. Various disturbances in the pelvic organs have been successfully managed by chiropractic.
TMJ Dysfunction Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction can be anything from the inability to open the mouth fully to clicking, popping or locking of the jaw, headaches, facial swelling, neck ache, or pain around the ear. Chiropractic care relieves pressure on the spine and cranial bones, thus helping to decrease muscle tension in the neck and around the jaw.
Stress The nervous system helps our bodies to adapt to its environment. When this system becomes “overloaded”, whether by a single traumatic event or the day-to-day stressors we experience, it starts to function abnormally. Subluxations in the spine can damage your nerves, weaken your health, and exhaust your energy stores. Many illnesses and diseases have been related to prolonged stress on the nervous system. Emotional, physical, and chemical stressors are what we live with every day. Chiropractic can help moderate the “tone” of the nervous system, much like a massage affects the tone of muscle tissue. The ability of chiropractic to reduce anxiety levels by removing vertebral subluxations from your spine can improve the function of your nervous system and promote better responses to stress.
Learning Disorders There have been many studies done which show that chiropractic care in children can help mitigate symptoms of hyperactivity, depression, anxiety, and nervousness. Some researchers theorize that chiropractic improves blood flow to the brain and interrupts unhealthy nerve reflexes in the spinal cord. The mechanism is still uncertain, but research into the utilization of chiropractic care and learning disorders is ongoing.
Colic Spinal distortion causing nerve damage or stress can have a wide range of effects on a baby’s body. These subluxations of the spine may be caused by “birth trauma” during the delivery of the baby through the birth canal. The release of “strain” in the cervical spine and skull has been shown to alleviate symptoms of crying, torticollis, fever of unknown origin, and sleeplessness in babies. Specific techniques and chiropractic adjustments are safe and barely noticed by the infant when they are performed.
Digestive Disorders Spinal misalignment (vertebral subluxation) has been found to produce dis-ease by irritating the nerves that supply various organs. Correction of spinal problems can relieve symptoms of stomach ulcers, gastritis, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and cramping. The bowels play a very important role in our immune system, and so it is imperative to have the digestive system working optimally. Bed-Wetting (Enuresis) Nerve stress or “spinal blockage” to the internal organs, including the bladder must be removed if 100% of the message being sent from the brain is to be received by an organ. This benefits your child’s overall health, no matter what condition they may have. Bed-wetting is often found to respond in many cases after a few adjustments.
Shoulder, Arm, Hand Problems Many problems of the upper extremity can be led back to wear the nerves exit the spine in the neck. These nerves innervate the muscle, skin, and other tissues in your arm and hand. The brachial plexus is a grouping of nerves that are between your neck and shoulder and branch off to supply different areas of the arm and hand. When there is damage to this region, different symptoms may be experienced such as neck pain or stiffness, pain radiating down the arm or into the hand, decreased grip strength, numbness, or tingling. Often times, accidents that cause whiplash will create these problems in a patient. The chiropractic approach to shoulder, arm, and hand problems, is to locate and correct a serious nerve-damaging spinal condition called the vertebral subluxation complex. This misalignment of your spinal bones can put stress on your nerves, bones, ligaments and discs associated with your neck and upper back. This may cause the symptoms you are experiencing in your arm or hand. Chiropractic will release spine and nerve pressure and help restore the healthy flow of nerve impulse between your brain and your body parts.
Whiplash Motor vehicle accidents and other injuries may cause damage to the muscles, bones, ligaments and nerves of the neck and upper back. Symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, stiffness, dizziness, numbness and tingling, or even blurred vision may occur as a result of the damage. Disc injury or bone fracture may also happen in some cases. Chiropractic care is a safe, effective treatment that can provide relief and increased mobility and flexibility allowing your body to heal faster.
Neck Pain and Headaches When bones of the cervical spine become subluxated (misaligned) they can have damaging effects on the muscle, ligament, and nerve tissue associated with that area of the neck. Many instances of neck pain start from something minor, such as sleeping in an awkward position. This may have irritated neck joints causing pain, headaches, eye problems, or even arm and hand pain. Proper treatment of any condition involves treating the cause and not just the symptoms such as the pain of a headache. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose the cause of your neck problems and offer care in the form of spinal adjustments, exercises, and modifications to your posture, behaviour and lifestyle. There numerous studies showing chiropractic adjustments can have good outcomes in treating neck pain and relieving the frequency and intensity of headaches.
High Blood Pressure Although the cause of high blood pressure is a bit of a mystery, recent studies show that chiropractic adjustments to the spine can have the lowering effect of 2 blood pressure medications. We know that there is an intimate relationship between the spine, the nervous system, and the internal organs, so that by ensuring these structures are operating optimally we can assume that the body will operate at 100%. An unhealthy spine may be associated with the number of different conditions including hypertension and changes in brain blood flow.
Disc Injury Many disc injuries are associated with trauma, but often years of poor posture, weight gain, incorrect lifting and bending, stress and spinal neglect can play a major role. Chiropractic adjustments can help “suck” the disc back into it’s normal place between the bones of the spine, reduce muscle spasm, inflammation and pain, and increase mobility in that region of the spine. Regular chiropractic care can help prevent small problems from becoming larger ones.
